How I Coordinate My Outfits

1) Arm Myself With Inspiration!
Before Pinterest (so hard to imagine that right now), I was what you would call an image hoarder. I kept a folders of printed photos and torn magazine pages. For that month I'd pick a couple of my favorites to draw inspiration from.
Today I still use my style file, but not quiet as much as I make use of Pinterest. I have a hand full of style boards, most separated by aesthetic.
I don't always have to refer to an image to create a look, but if I'm starving for ideas it sure does come in handy.

If you'd like to check out my Pins, take a look at this post here.

4)Theme
A theme can be inspired by just about anything: A character, different time periods, an image, a season, a scheme of colors... and the list goes on.
If you have a theme it creates a more interesting outfit. It also makes it a little more clear what you're looking for when searching through your closet.

5) Lay it Out
After I pick all the possible pieces I might use for the look, I lay it out on my bed. I might have a skirt or two, a dress, different necklaces and broaches. I even pull out possible shoes and socks.
Then I start matching things ups. Examining if colors work, texture compliment each other, and the over all style is coming across(or something better).

6) Examine Again
Once I have my chosen coordinate on I ask myself:
-Is it proportioned well? (Shirt too long for the skirt paired with it? Or does the hem comes to an awkward length where I need to ditch the flats and get some heels?)
-Is it flattering?
-Am I trying too hard with the layering? (Example: Wearing a plain T-shirt under a crisp cotton jumper)
-Is there a piece throwing the whole look off? It needs to go!

If one of these are true, I go back to the pile of possible pieces on my bead and try something else till it works.

7) Be Brave
Put current trends aside. Forget what everyone else is wearing! Dress for yourself even if a couple of people poke fun. I'm sure somewhere deep down inside they wish to have the same bravery.

For me fashion is fun and experimental. Sometimes I make awesome coordinate, and others times I fall short of success. In the end I tried something new. Who's knows? That failed outfit  might spring on a fantastic new!

If you'd like to se how I physically apply these principles check out the video blow.
